African Americans bias towards dark-skinned women

This is a 9-minute trailer for the upcoming documentary Dark Girls, which explores the deep-rooted biases and attitudes about skin colour within Black American culture.

As an outsider, I was unaware of the discrimination that goes on within the Black community towards darker skinned women. I was shocked and saddened to learn that Black women judge other Black women on the darkness or lightness of their skin. One woman in the video says, "If I had a little girl, I didn't want her to be dark. I remember saying that. I didn't want her to be dark like me."

The film is due for release in the Fall or Winter of 2011. Follow Dark Girls Movie on Facebook to stay updated.

  1. That is so untrue. I am dark-skinned and would be very rich if I had a penny for every person that tells me how beautiful I am and how pretty my skin is. My sister also is complemented on her beauty on a regular basis by friends and total strangers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and ultimately it is what is in the inside that matters. Let us focus on something that really matter instead of perpetuating out-dated beliefs that are no longer in fashion.

  2. @Anonymous - Are the people that say your skin is beautiful Black? Because in this video there was woman who said the same thing as you - that people compliment her skin and say she's beautiful, but the compliments don't come from other Blacks.
It's great that you haven't had the experience of discrimination from within the Black community... but obviously lots of other women have. Although I agree that they are out-dated beliefs, they appear to still be going strong within the community. (Or maybe it's more of a problem in America than in Canada?)
