Take Back the Night Calgary 2012

It's almost time for one of Calgary's largest and longest-standing feminist events!

Take Back the Night is a march and rally held every year in cities around the world to protest violence against women. The event in Calgary will begin with a rally featuring local speakers and performers. Following the rally, women take to the streets and march through downtown to symbolize a woman's right to walk at night without fearing for her safety. After the march there is a "speakout" where participants may share their experiences with violence.

Participants find this to be a very empowering event, even though the subject matter can be intense.
Here are the details of this year's event:

Date: Friday, September 21, 2012
Time: 8:00 - 9:30 p.m.
Location: Connaught Park - 11 St & 14 Ave S.W.

Participants are encouraged to bring signs, drums, glow-sticks or anything that draws attention!

The event is open to everyone, men and children included. Please be aware that the subject matter can be graphic and may not be suitable for young children.

During the march, it is traditional that women walk through the streets unescorted. Men and older boys are welcome to show their solidarity by walking on the sidewalk alongside the women.

For more details, view the Facebook event, or visit Take Back the Night Calgary.
